Why earthquake preparation matters in Australia
Earthquakes can occur anywhere in Australia. While major events are rare, the 1989 Newcastle earthquake proved the devastating impact when we're unprepared.
No advance warning
Unlike bushfires or floods, earthquakes provide zero warning. The ground shakes immediately, giving you seconds to react. Preparation must happen before the event.
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On is your immediate response
- Heavy items can fall, causing injuries or blocking exits
- Aftershocks can continue for days or weeks after main quake
Infrastructure damage
Even moderate earthquakes can damage buildings, break gas and water lines, and cut power. Roads crack, bridges fail, and emergency services are overwhelmed.
- Gas leaks create fire risk after shaking stops
- Water mains break, leaving no clean water for days
- Buildings may be unsafe to re-enter until inspected
Earthquake Emergency Kits
Our earthquake kits include supplies for when infrastructure fails: water, food, first aid, and safety equipment to sustain you for 72+ hours.
