The beginning

Why a Type 1 diabetic from Queenstown ended up building Australian emergency kits

Matt, founder of Be Ready Australia

Matt/Founder, Be Ready Australia

I'm Matt. When you manage Type 1, being prepared stops being optional. You don't head out — even just down the road — assuming it'll all go to plan. You carry what you need to handle it when it doesn't. After enough years, that mindset is just how you live.

So I'd been building my own kits for a long time before this — rougher, more personal versions, packed for alpine cold, isolation, and being a long way from help. Queenstown teaches you that quickly.

When I moved to the Sunshine Coast, the hazards changed — bushfire, flood, storms — but the lesson didn't. And it took me a while to notice the same thinking applies to every household: fire seasons start earlier, flood warnings are routine, the power goes out for days, and most of us still aren't set up to manage 72 hours on our own.

Watching emergencies around the world grow more frequent and severe, I realised we all need to be prepared — at least to some degree.

The idea grew into testing through last year — small batches, real stock, physically packed and checked. We're ready now to launch the fire and flood pilots.

Where we are right now

What's ready — and what isn't yet

We'd rather be honest about our stage than dress it up. Here's exactly what you can buy today, what's still in the workshop, and how to get help in the meantime.

Where we're headed

Strong plans, honestly held

These are the directions we're building toward — real intentions, not dates we'll pretend to hit. We're building it in the open, here on the Sunshine Coast.

Now

Launch the fire and flood pilots

Small-batch pilots shipping to real households from early July, so the products earn their reputation before we scale anything.

Next

Round out the essentials

Bring the flood and all-hazard disaster kits out of pilot, and explore medical and everyday-carry kits built for Australian conditions.

The bigger goal

Monitoring, without the lock-in

LoRa-based fire and flood sensing for rural and regional properties — self-hosted or managed, and never behind a mandatory subscription. It is a large, underserved space, and it is where we want to take this.
